Locksmith scams are one of the fastest growing frauds in America.

How does a locksmith scam work? As a customer in need we generally start calling multiple companies to shop around. These fake locksmith companies generally quote a low price making you think you are getting a bargain! Unfortunately they have quite a few undisclosed hidden fees.  When they hand you the bill you will be shocked as the price quoted was just a service fee.

Other times you might be told things like your lock is special and can’t be picked and the cost to drill and replace is much higher than it should be.

The only way to ensure you do not fall victim to a locksmith scam is to be ready before an emergency occurs. However, most people will not even think about a locksmith until a locksmith emergency arises. If you find yourself in this position here are some simple tips to follow, to ensure you are not taken advantage of.

Be wary of companies with generic names. Once you decide on a company do some research. Look them up, and read their reviews. Be careful as some of these companies saturate their listings with fake positive reviews that can be purchased online. Check sunbiz to see if their company name is registered or check the local tax office to see if they have a local business tax license.

Ask about pricing, most of these companies will quote a low price but when you are handed the bill it is well over the estimated price! Ask about additional charges and confirm pricing before the work is done. Occasionally a price change is necessary but drastic price changes can be a sign you are going to get scammed.

Remember these companies rely on you being in a desperate situation. Don´t let them take advantage of your unfortunate circumstance.
